District 112 School Board Approves Helpful New School Program!

The program is an alternative kindergarten experience for children with summer birthdays.

The new program Kinder Academy is based on parent demand. Every year, kindergarten staff talk to parents who are on the fence about whether to send their child to kindergarten or whether to wait a year. Kinder Academy fills this gap in the kindergarten programming and gives the option for those late-birthday kindergarten students whose parents wonder if they are ready for kindergarten.

It is a morning, half-day kindergarten program at the Kindergarten Center beginning in the fall of 2013. The target age range is children who turn 5 in the summer, but it is open to other young 5 year-olds. Children must be 5 years old on or before September 1.

The program will follow Eastern Carver County Schools’ kindergarten curriculum. Students who are ready to move on to first grade after one year, based on the teacher’s assessment, will do so. Students who would benefit from an additional year will stay in the program, with the same teacher. The teacher will modify the curriculum for the older children’s developmental level.

This multi-age classroom is consistent with Eastern Carver County Schools’ mission of personalized learning and our continuous progress initiative. These older kindergarten students will be mini-leaders in the class and role models to incoming young 5 year olds. After year two, older students will advance to first grade.

If you have a child who turn 5 in the summer  is most likely a candidate for this program, but any interested families will be considered.

The application process will include consideration of whether a child is ready for this classroom setting. Children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1.

Interested parents will need to attend an informational meeting where applications will be provided at that time:
