Chanhassen Fire Department Adds 3 New Firefighters
During a traditional “Black Hat” ceremony July 7, the Chanhassen Fire Department added three new firefighters to the ranks bringing the total number to 44.
According to the Chanhassen Villager, David Arion, Eric Formico and Joseph LeFevere were the new members who were officially welcomed. All successfully completed a yearlong probationary period before their confirmation.
The addition of three new firefighters is challenging a trend that shows many communities’ firefighter ranks are depleted, the newspaper reported.
“In the fire service, we are struggling a little bit to recruit,” Fire Chief Don Johnson, who became Chanhassen fire chief in May after having served as a firefighter in Lakeville, told the newspaper. “In Chanhassen, we’re lucky to have qualified people to do the job.”
Chanhassen’s target is to have 45 full-fledged firefighters. In addition to the three new members, there are nine others who have applied to be probationary members. The probationary officers will be trained this fall and if they successfully complete the training year they will receive black hats at this time next year, the newspaper said.
